2015-2020 Chevrolet Suburban Parts Guide: What Owners Replace First

The Suburban K2XX ran from 2015-2020 and is the long-wheelbase workhorse. After enough of these come across the parts counter you start to see the same short list of components over and over. Here is what owners of this generation actually end up buying, and what to know before you order.

Suspension

The usual tell is a clunk over expansion joints that you feel in the floor more than you hear. Heat is the accelerant on this one, which is why it shows up faster here than up north.

Common parts in this group: shocks, struts, control arms, ball joints, sway bar links.

Worth knowing: GM valving is tuned to the specific spring rate and curb weight of your trim, and a generic replacement changes the whole balance.

Drivetrain and Transfer Case

The usual tell is a clunk on the transition from drive to reverse. Worth checking at the same time you rotate tires, since the wheel is already off.

Common parts in this group: transfer case encoder motors, front differential actuators, u-joints, CV axles, driveshaft center bearings.

Worth knowing: Wheel bearings on modern GM trucks carry the wheel speed sensor in the same assembly, and sensor tolerance affects ABS and stability control.

Brakes

The usual tell is a squeal that shows up cold and disappears after two or three stops. Worth checking at the same time you rotate tires, since the wheel is already off.

Common parts in this group: brake pads, brake rotors, brake calipers, brake hoses, wheel speed sensors.

Worth knowing: Aftermarket rotors are frequently thinner at the same nominal diameter, which changes heat capacity and warp behavior.

Heating and Air Conditioning

The usual tell is a musty smell for the first thirty seconds after startup. This is one of the items where a towing or work truck and a commuter diverge sharply.

Common parts in this group: cabin air filters, blower motors, blower motor resistors, A/C compressors, condensers.

Worth knowing: R-1234yf systems on newer GM vehicles use different oils and fittings than older R-134a systems.

Filters and Fluids

The usual tell is a slight hesitation on hard acceleration with a dirty air filter. Worth checking at the same time you rotate tires, since the wheel is already off.

Common parts in this group: oil filters, air filters, cabin air filters, fuel filters, transmission filters.

Worth knowing: GM oil filters are built to a specific bypass pressure and anti-drainback valve spec, which matters most on cold starts.

Body and Exterior

The usual tell is a hazy or yellowed headlamp lens that no longer projects a sharp cutoff. Mileage is a rough guide here. Load, heat and road surface matter more.

Common parts in this group: mirrors, door handles, grilles, bumper covers, headlamps.

Worth knowing: Body panels and lamps have to match the vehicle’s specific mounting points and, on lamps, the exact photometric pattern that was certified.

Before You Order

Have the VIN ready. On a Suburban the same model year can carry two or three different engines and several suspension packages.
Check the SPID label in the glove box or console for your RPO codes.
Front and rear parts are rarely the same number, even when they look identical.
