Ignition and Engine Management

The usual tell is a check engine light that flashes under load, which means raw fuel is going into the converter. Catch it early and it is a parts bill. Ignore it and it becomes a parts and labor bill.

Common parts in this group: spark plugs, ignition coils, camshaft position sensors, crankshaft position sensors, oxygen sensors.

Worth knowing: Oxygen sensor response time is what the fuel trim strategy is built around; slow generic sensors cause driveability problems that never set a clean code.

Sensors, Cameras and Driver Assistance

The usual tell is a backup camera image that flickers, goes blue, or shows lines. Worth checking at the same time you rotate tires, since the wheel is already off.

Common parts in this group: park assist sensors, backup cameras, blind zone modules, front camera modules, radar sensors.

Worth knowing: These are calibrated devices, and the calibration lives in the module that expects a specific sensor.

Electrical and Charging

The usual tell is the auto stop-start feature quietly deactivating itself. The number in the manual assumes conditions most people in North Texas do not have.

Common parts in this group: batteries, battery cables, alternators, starters, body control modules.

Worth knowing: GM’s battery management system is calibrated to a specific battery chemistry, group size and reserve capacity.

Heating and Air Conditioning

The usual tell is vents that will not switch from defrost to floor. Worth checking at the same time you rotate tires, since the wheel is already off.

Worth knowing: R-1234yf systems on newer GM vehicles use different oils and fittings than older R-134a systems.

Brakes

The usual tell is a pedal that sits lower than it used to, or sinks slowly at a stoplight. How the vehicle gets used moves this interval more than the odometer does.

Worth knowing: GM friction material is matched to the specific rotor metallurgy and the ABS calibration on your vehicle.

Interior

The usual tell is a console lid hinge that has cracked at the pivot. This is one of the items where a towing or work truck and a commuter diverge sharply.

Common parts in this group: floor liners, carpet floor mats, console lids, seat covers, shift knobs.

Worth knowing: GM Accessories liners are laser-measured to the specific floor pan and retain the factory anchor posts, which is a safety item.

Before You Order

Have the VIN ready. On a Savana the same model year can carry two or three different engines and several suspension packages.
