The Sierra 3500HD T1 ran from 2020-2023 and is dually, gooseneck, and max tow. After enough of these come across the parts counter you start to see the same short list of components over and over. Here is what owners of this generation actually end up buying, and what to know before you order.
Body and Exterior
The usual tell is a hazy or yellowed headlamp lens that no longer projects a sharp cutoff. Heat is the accelerant on this one, which is why it shows up faster here than up north.
Common parts in this group: mirrors, door handles, grilles, bumper covers, headlamps.
Worth knowing: Factory paint codes only work if the substrate and primer are the same.
Ignition and Engine Management
The usual tell is a rough idle that smooths out above 2,000 rpm. Mileage is a rough guide here. Load, heat and road surface matter more.
Common parts in this group: spark plugs, ignition coils, camshaft position sensors, crankshaft position sensors, oxygen sensors.
Worth knowing: Coil primary resistance affects dwell, and the ECM is calibrated for the factory value.
Filters and Fluids
The usual tell is reduced airflow from the vents. Mileage is a rough guide here. Load, heat and road surface matter more.
Common parts in this group: oil filters, air filters, cabin air filters, fuel filters, transmission filters.
Worth knowing: Dexos1 and dexos2 licensing exists because GM engines have specific requirements, and warranty language references it directly.
Sensors, Cameras and Driver Assistance
The usual tell is a backup camera image that flickers, goes blue, or shows lines. Mileage is a rough guide here. Load, heat and road surface matter more.
Common parts in this group: park assist sensors, backup cameras, blind zone modules, front camera modules, radar sensors.
Worth knowing: TPMS sensors have to match the protocol and frequency the receiver expects.
Electrical and Charging
The usual tell is warning lights that appear in clusters and then clear themselves. Mileage is a rough guide here. Load, heat and road surface matter more.
Common parts in this group: batteries, battery cables, alternators, starters, body control modules.
Worth knowing: Many recent GM vehicles need the new battery registered to the module or the charging system will keep undercharging it.
Cooling System
The usual tell is a heater that blows cool at idle and warm at speed. How the vehicle gets used moves this interval more than the odometer does.
Common parts in this group: radiators, water pumps, thermostats, coolant hoses, cooling fans.
Worth knowing: Aftermarket radiators frequently use fewer rows or thinner tanks than the original, which shows up as a heat problem only when you tow.
Before You Order
- Have the VIN ready. On a Sierra 3500HD the same model year can carry two or three different engines and several suspension packages.
- Check the SPID label in the glove box or console for your RPO codes.
- Front and rear parts are rarely the same number, even when they look identical.
- If the part is electrical, confirm the fit before you order. Electrical parts are not returnable at any GM dealer, including us.
