The usual tell is a backup camera image that flickers, goes blue, or shows lines. Heat is the accelerant on this one, which is why it shows up faster here than up north.

Common parts in this group: park assist sensors, backup cameras, blind zone modules, front camera modules, radar sensors.

Worth knowing: TPMS sensors have to match the protocol and frequency the receiver expects.

Interior

The usual tell is carpet that stays damp under a worn factory mat. Catch it early and it is a parts bill. Ignore it and it becomes a parts and labor bill.

Common parts in this group: floor liners, carpet floor mats, console lids, seat covers, shift knobs.

Worth knowing: GM Accessories liners are laser-measured to the specific floor pan and retain the factory anchor posts, which is a safety item.

Ignition and Engine Management

The usual tell is fuel economy that drifts down a mile or two per gallon over a few months. Mileage is a rough guide here. Load, heat and road surface matter more.

Common parts in this group: spark plugs, ignition coils, camshaft position sensors, crankshaft position sensors, oxygen sensors.

Worth knowing: Coil primary resistance affects dwell, and the ECM is calibrated for the factory value.

Filters and Fluids

The usual tell is a slight hesitation on hard acceleration with a dirty air filter. This is one of the items where a towing or work truck and a commuter diverge sharply.

Common parts in this group: oil filters, air filters, cabin air filters, fuel filters, transmission filters.

Worth knowing: GM oil filters are built to a specific bypass pressure and anti-drainback valve spec, which matters most on cold starts.

Cooling System

The usual tell is a temperature gauge that climbs in traffic and drops back on the highway. Worth checking at the same time you rotate tires, since the wheel is already off.

Common parts in this group: radiators, water pumps, thermostats, coolant hoses, cooling fans.

Worth knowing: Aftermarket radiators frequently use fewer rows or thinner tanks than the original, which shows up as a heat problem only when you tow.

Electrical and Charging

The usual tell is the auto stop-start feature quietly deactivating itself. How the vehicle gets used moves this interval more than the odometer does.

Common parts in this group: batteries, battery cables, alternators, starters, body control modules.

Worth knowing: Auxiliary and stop-start systems use AGM batteries, and dropping a flooded battery in is a short path to a repeat failure.

Before You Order

Have the VIN ready. On a Silverado 1500 the same model year can carry two or three different engines and several suspension packages.
Check the SPID label in the glove box or console for your RPO codes.
Front and rear parts are rarely the same number, even when they look identical.
