Winter Storm Kit for Your GM Vehicle (2025)

Winter Storm Kit for Your GM Vehicle (2025) - GM Parts Club

North Texas gets one or two real winter events a year and nobody is ready for either of them. Here is what to actually look at, using a 2023-2025 GMC Canyon as the example.

Electrical and Charging

Watch for a battery that tests fine at the counter but fails after sitting three days. Batteries in Texas heat routinely give up between three and five years. Test annually after year three, before the first cold snap.

GM’s battery management system is calibrated to a specific battery chemistry, group size and reserve capacity.

Glass and Wipers

Watch for wipers that park in the wrong position. Blades every six to twelve months. In North Texas, summer heat kills blades faster than winter does.

Windshields with acoustic interlayer, HUD or camera brackets are not interchangeable with base glass.

Brakes

Watch for a squeal that shows up cold and disappears after two or three stops. Inspect at every tire rotation. Most GM trucks and SUVs go 30,000 to 60,000 miles on front pads depending on how they are used, and towing cuts that hard.

Aftermarket rotors are frequently thinner at the same nominal diameter, which changes heat capacity and warp behavior.

The Short Checklist

  • Batteries: Vehicles with stop-start often use two batteries. Confirm which one you are replacing before ordering.
  • Wiper blades: Driver and passenger blades are frequently different lengths on the same vehicle.
  • Brake pads: Front and rear pads are almost never the same part, and heavy duty, tow and performance brake packages use different calipers and rotors than the base vehicle.

Everything here is available as a genuine GM part through our GMC OEM parts catalog. If you would rather search directly, search for Canyon parts.
