2015-2019 GMC Sierra 2500HD Parts Guide: What Owners Replace First

Electrical and Charging

Worth knowing: GM’s battery management system is calibrated to a specific battery chemistry, group size and reserve capacity.

Cooling System

The usual tell is the sweet smell of coolant after shutdown with no visible puddle. Owners who do mostly short trips see this sooner than the mileage suggests.

Common parts in this group: radiators, water pumps, thermostats, coolant hoses, cooling fans.

Worth knowing: Aftermarket radiators frequently use fewer rows or thinner tanks than the original, which shows up as a heat problem only when you tow.

Filters and Fluids

The usual tell is an oil life monitor that reaches zero faster than it used to. Mileage is a rough guide here. Load, heat and road surface matter more.

Worth knowing: Dexos1 and dexos2 licensing exists because GM engines have specific requirements, and warranty language references it directly.

Suspension

The usual tell is uneven or feathered tire wear on the inside or outside shoulder. Catch it early and it is a parts bill. Ignore it and it becomes a parts and labor bill.

Worth knowing: GM valving is tuned to the specific spring rate and curb weight of your trim, and a generic replacement changes the whole balance.

Interior

The usual tell is a sun visor that will not stay up. How the vehicle gets used moves this interval more than the odometer does.

Common parts in this group: floor liners, carpet floor mats, console lids, seat covers, shift knobs.

Worth knowing: Genuine trim matches grain and color code, which universal parts never quite do.

Brakes

The usual tell is a squeal that shows up cold and disappears after two or three stops. Mileage is a rough guide here. Load, heat and road surface matter more.

Common parts in this group: brake pads, brake rotors, brake calipers, brake hoses, wheel speed sensors.

Worth knowing: Pad compound changes brake torque, and brake torque is one of the inputs the stability control system assumes it knows.

Before You Order
