Year End Parts Buying: 2020-2023 Buick Encore GX Checklist

How to use the end of the year to catch up on deferred maintenance. Applied to a 2020-2023 Encore GX, here is what that looks like.

Suspension

Watch for a clunk over expansion joints that you feel in the floor more than you hear. Shocks and struts are wear items. Plan on inspection at 50,000 miles and replacement somewhere between 60,000 and 100,000 depending on road quality and load.

Filters and Fluids

Watch for reduced airflow from the vents. Follow the oil life monitor rather than a fixed mileage. Engine air filter every 30,000 to 45,000 miles. Transmission service intervals vary widely by transmission and by whether you tow.

Electrical and Charging

Watch for a battery that tests fine at the counter but fails after sitting three days. Batteries in Texas heat routinely give up between three and five years. Test annually after year three, before the first cold snap.

Ignition and Engine Management

Watch for a check engine light that flashes under load, which means raw fuel is going into the converter. Iridium plugs on most modern GM engines are a 90,000 to 100,000 mile item. Coils are replaced on failure, not on a schedule.

The Short Version

Shocks: Trim and package content matters enormously here. Off-road packages, air ride and adaptive or magnetic damping all use different parts than the base vehicle wearing the same model name.
Oil filters: Engine size and emissions equipment change the filter, and diesel filter kits in particular are not interchangeable across model years.
Batteries: Vehicles with stop-start often use two batteries. Confirm which one you are replacing before ordering.
Spark plugs: The same nameplate can have three different engines in one model year. VIN is the only reliable way to get the right plug.
