Wiper and Lighting Season: Chevrolet Equinox Edition

Shorter days, more rain, and the parts that matter. Applied to a 2018-2024 Equinox, here is what that looks like.

Cooling System

Watch for a heater that blows cool at idle and warm at speed. GM’s long-life coolant is generally rated for 5 years or 150,000 miles on the first fill and 5 years or 100,000 miles after that. Hoses and the surge tank should be inspected annually once past 80,000 miles.

Drivetrain and Transfer Case

Watch for vibration that appears above 55 mph and grows with speed. Transfer case and differential fluid on a schedule that tightens sharply if you tow or run in dust. Wheel bearings are replaced on noise, not on mileage.

Filters and Fluids

Watch for a diesel that derates or throws a fuel pressure code on a neglected filter. Follow the oil life monitor rather than a fixed mileage. Engine air filter every 30,000 to 45,000 miles. Transmission service intervals vary widely by transmission and by whether you tow.

Sensors, Cameras and Driver Assistance

Watch for a lane keep or forward collision system that reports as unavailable after a windshield replacement. TPMS sensor batteries typically last seven to ten years and are commonly replaced as a set during a tire change.

The Short Version

Radiators: Engine, tow package and rear-A/C content all change the radiator and hose part numbers. Have the VIN ready.
Transfer case encoder motors: Ride height, axle ratio and locking differential content all change these numbers.
Oil filters: Engine size and emissions equipment change the filter, and diesel filter kits in particular are not interchangeable across model years.
Park assist sensors: Painted park assist sensors are ordered in primer and painted to your code. Confirm your paint code before ordering.
