Understanding the Cooling System System on the 2003-2024 Chevrolet Express - GM Parts Club

The cooling system system on the 2003-2024 Express is not complicated, but it is easy to spend money in the wrong place on it. This is the version we give people at the counter.

What You Will Notice First

  • The sweet smell of coolant after shutdown with no visible puddle
  • A temperature gauge that climbs in traffic and drops back on the highway
  • Crusty orange residue around a hose clamp or the surge tank seam
  • A heater that blows cool at idle and warm at speed

None of these are emergencies on day one. All of them get more expensive if you sit on them.

The Parts Involved

  • Radiators.
  • Water pumps.
  • Thermostats.
  • Coolant hoses.
  • Cooling fans.
  • Surge tanks.
  • Radiator caps.
  • DEX-COOL coolant.

Why the Factory Part Matters Here

  • GM cooling systems are DEX-COOL based and the seal and gasket materials are chosen for that chemistry.
  • Surge tanks and caps are pressure-rated to the specific system, and a wrong cap is a slow way to cook a head gasket.
  • Aftermarket radiators frequently use fewer rows or thinner tanks than the original, which shows up as a heat problem only when you tow.

Service Interval

GM’s long-life coolant is generally rated for 5 years or 150,000 miles on the first fill and 5 years or 100,000 miles after that. Hoses and the surge tank should be inspected annually once past 80,000 miles.

Ordering Notes

Engine, tow package and rear-A/C content all change the radiator and hose part numbers. Have the VIN ready. On the Express specifically, trim and package content is the thing that trips people up.

Ordering is easiest if you have the VIN in front of you. Head to our Chevrolet OEM parts catalog to shop by vehicle, or search for radiators to go straight to a part.
