Holiday Travel With the Family 2023

Holiday Travel With the Family 2023 - GM Parts Club

Holiday travel means a full vehicle, a lot of miles in a short window, and weather that can turn. You are driving loaded, often at night, often in rain. Wipers and brakes matter more than usual.

The Mechanical Checks

Working through a 2003-2023 GMC Savana as the example, in the order that matters.

Electrical and Charging

Watch for warning lights that appear in clusters and then clear themselves. Batteries in Texas heat routinely give up between three and five years. Test annually after year three, before the first cold snap.

Glass and Wipers

Watch for chattering or streaking that returns within a week of new blades. Blades every six to twelve months. In North Texas, summer heat kills blades faster than winter does.

Brakes

Watch for a squeal that shows up cold and disappears after two or three stops. Inspect at every tire rotation. Most GM trucks and SUVs go 30,000 to 60,000 miles on front pads depending on how they are used, and towing cuts that hard.

Heating and Air Conditioning

Watch for air that is cold at highway speed and warm at a stoplight. Cabin air filter every 12,000 to 15,000 miles, or annually. In North Texas with construction dust and cedar season, annually is the honest number.

Filters and Fluids

Watch for a diesel that derates or throws a fuel pressure code on a neglected filter. Follow the oil life monitor rather than a fixed mileage. Engine air filter every 30,000 to 45,000 miles. Transmission service intervals vary widely by transmission and by whether you tow.

The Cargo Problem

The mechanical side gets all the attention and the cargo side causes most of the actual misery. A loaded vehicle with nothing restraining the load is loud, and in a hard stop it is dangerous.

Cargo Nets

Envelope and vertical nets that keep loose cargo from becoming a projectile. Small, cheap, and the recipient will use it every week.

Browse genuine GM cargo nets.

Cargo Area Liners and Mats

Molded trays with a raised lip for the cargo floor. For anyone who hauls groceries, dogs, sports gear or job site material in an SUV.

All-Weather Floor Liners

Molded rubber liners with deep channels that trap water, salt and mud instead of letting it reach the carpet. The single most-given GM accessory, and for good reason. They fit the exact floor pan and keep the factory retention posts, which universal mats do not.

Roadside and First Aid Kits

GM-branded emergency and first aid kits sized for the cargo area. The gift you hope never gets used. Good for a new driver.

Before You Pull Out

  • Tire pressure at the door placard, checked cold, including the spare.
  • Wiper blades and washer fluid, because you will need both at the worst moment.
  • Battery tested, not guessed at.
  • Cabin air filter, if it has been more than a year.
  • Everything in the cargo area actually restrained.

Ordering is easiest if you have the VIN in front of you. Head to our GMC OEM parts catalog to shop by vehicle, or search for Savana accessories to go straight to a part.
