Most exhaust and emissions problems announce themselves well before they strand anybody. On a 2019-2026 XT4, these are the ones worth acting on.
1. A diesel that regenerates far more often than it used to
This one is usually early, which is good news, because it is cheap to fix early. Start by looking at diesel particulate filters.
2. A check engine light that appears after fueling and clears itself
By the time this is obvious you are generally replacing more than one part. Start by looking at DEF injectors.
3. An exhaust tick on cold start that quiets as the manifold expands
This is the symptom people put off longest and regret most. Start by looking at catalytic converters.
4. A P0420 or P0430 efficiency code
This one is usually early, which is good news, because it is cheap to fix early. Start by looking at catalytic converters.
