2015-2020 Cadillac Escalade ESV Trailering Setup, Done Right

2015-2020 Cadillac Escalade ESV Trailering Setup, Done Right - GM Parts Club

A 2015-2020 Escalade ESV will tow more than most people ask of it. What gets people into trouble is almost never the truck itself. It is the connection, the wiring and the brakes.

The Hitch and Receiver

If the vehicle did not come with a factory tow package, the receiver, the wiring and sometimes the cooling content are all separate. A factory receiver bolts to designed load points. That is the entire argument for it.

Wiring and the Trailer Brake Controller

Seven-way harnesses corrode from the inside, usually at the connector. If your trailer lights flicker over bumps, the problem is almost always the connector or the ground, not the trailer. Integrated brake controllers talk to the vehicle module and are far more consistent than an aftermarket box under the dash.

Brakes

Inspect at every tire rotation. Most GM trucks and SUVs go 30,000 to 60,000 miles on front pads depending on how they are used, and towing cuts that hard. Towing is the fastest way to find out your pads were closer to the end than you thought.

Cooling

Heat is what actually limits a tow, not torque. Engine, tow package and rear-A/C content all change the radiator and hose part numbers. Have the VIN ready. Check hoses and the surge tank before a long haul, not after.

Mirrors and Visibility

Factory tow mirrors carry heat, turn signals, blind zone modules and sometimes cameras. The connector varies by content level, so confirm before ordering.

Quick Pre-Trip Checklist

  • Trailer plug seated and clean, all seven functions tested.
  • Brake controller gain set with the trailer loaded, not empty.
  • Tire pressure on the truck at the door placard, trailer tires at the sidewall number.
  • Ball and coupler sized to each other, safety chains crossed.
  • Pads and rotors inspected within the last few thousand miles.

Ordering is easiest if you have the VIN in front of you. Head to our Cadillac OEM parts catalog to shop by vehicle, or search for Escalade ESV trailering to go straight to a part.
